Summarise on Task A Q1:Communal riots of 1964 text from:http://infopedia.nl.sg/articles/SIP_45_2005-01-06.html Basically this is actually about the events happening from 19 July 1964 onwards after Singapore merged with the Federation of Malaysia.A brief summarising on the events that took place. Back then,a minority of Malay population were expecting some special rights given to them after the merge. In the end they were angry when Malays having special right was never part of the agreement for merger and would never be agreed upon by any government of Singapore due to different races living in Singapore. After these rumors were sent out to others, near 1,000 Malay non-political leaders from 101 organisations met Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the Prime Minister of Singapore and Encik Othman Wok, the Minister for Social Affairs to clarify the issue of the special rights for Malays. However, they were later given word by PM Lee that the government would neither allow a quota system for jobs nor special licences and land reservations for Malays as he think that all Singaporean citizens had equal rights, regardless of race.To respond to PM Lee's clarify, the 23-man Singapore UMNO Action Committee, a political organisation which claimed to speak for all Singapore Malays, speak up and claimed that Mr Lee himself was trying to break the harmony and good relations between Malays and Chinese and UMNO State leader, Senator Ahmad Haji Taff also emphasised that their campaign has been directed solely at PM Lee and his Government for not implementing the special rights clause in the Constitution but not a campaign against the Chinese. On 21 July 1964 ,rioting finally broke out on the eve of the planned massive celebrations for Prophet Muhammad's birthday when a protest demonstration by Malays escalated from a verbal war of taunts and insults with Chinese bystanders. This caused the ensuing violence to continue the next few days, leaving 22 people dead and 454 injured. Curfew hours were then imposed to restore law and order. The curfew was gradually relaxed by 2 August 1964. On the same year 2 September, riots started once again when a Malay trishaw rider was stabbed to death at night. This continued for another five days with 12 people killed, 109 injured and over 1,200 people arrested for rioting and curfew-breaking. The curfew was again lifted on 11 September when the situation returned to normal. Some factors that were actually contributing to the outbreak of these riots: (1) to enforce their policy of Confrontation with the newly-formed Federation of Malaysia, a number of Indonesian activists had infiltrated into Singapore in attempts to arouse the religious fervour of the more fanatical Malays (2) Chinese Secret Society gangs seized the opportunity to stir up violence (3) inflammatory reporting in the vernacular press helped to fan racial emotions. posted by:eddie Task A Q2 & Q3:Maria Hertogh Riots text & video from:http://groups.msn.com/malaysianmemories/mariahertogh1.msnw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLt1Gj2IhvQ The riots broke out over the custody battle of a 13 year old girl , Maria. Maria was given to a malay lady Aminah by her real mother without her husband kowledge as her parents was imprisoned during the Japanese Occupation and Aminah claimed that she was given to change to make it a suitable for the new situation.Maria was taken by Aminah and brought as a muslim and in malay ways of life while her real father does not know that her wife had given to Aminah to take care. Life would be normal if not for a British official who spotted a "white girl" at a school function and Maria was found. In 1949,When Maria's real mother came to reclaimed her back , this case brought to a high court in Singapore and was placed under the care of social welfare depatment. In May1950,the court ruled that Maria should returned to her natural parents. Aminah then opposed the decision and after two months , the court returned Maria to Aminah.Under Aminah's care,Maria went throught a marriage between a Maly teacher, when Maria was only 13 year old. In November 1950,things started to heat up when the court ruled that Maria should return to her natural parents her father was not consulted when Aminah took her off to Bandung. Maria should be subjected to Dutch laws which do not permit any girl under 16 to be married, thus her Muslim marriage was made invalid. Meanwhile, there was a arouse of the reporters and photographers of Maria incident. On 11 December 1950,Aminah then opposed again and the Appeal Court sat to hear Maria’s case. It was a suprise that the judge only took five minutes to threw out Aminah’s appeal. This caused the supporters of Aminah to start the serious riots as they think that the colonial legal system was biased against Muslims. Any Europian or Eurasian in sight was attacked and cars was overturned and burnt.it continued for 3 days until 13 December , troops was sent to maintain law and order , the situation is then under controlled .About 18 people were killed and 173 were injured. posted by:Mr T.Z.Q. |
